The Smartwool community is a collection of people who believe that time outside is valuable, restorative, and essential for everyone. When Smartwool started making socks back in 1994, their founders simply wanted to be able to ski longer without getting cold toes. That’s when they discovered the benefits of Merino wool as a performance fabric. It was soft (softer than any wool they had every felt), moisture-wicking, thermoregulating (warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s warm), sustainable, and odor-neutralizing- helping to keep feet dry, comfortable, and warm for longer than the synthetic socks they were wearing at the time. It worked so well, in fact, that Smartwool uses it in almost every single item they make.
Smartwool was the first outdoor company to make performance Merino wool ski socks- revolutionizing the category and forever changing the way outdoor enthusiasts viewed their feet.
Smartwool’s whole brand was built on the desire to be comfortable on outdoor adventures-we wanted to go farther and experience more. And that drive continues to fuel everything Smartwool does. From their Merino wool supply chain to the Smartwool advocacy program to how they design their socks and apparel, Smartwool exists to help you play, love, and laugh in the great outdoors as often as you would like.

I love merino wool and am always looking for neutral colors, which is a never-ending battle since women’s socks always seem to come in either stark white, or bright candy colors or girly pastels and none of those look good with anything except gym clothes. Even SmartWool tends to colors that clash with everything I own and I don’t necessarily want them showing every time I take a step. These are a nice gray with an understated blueish accent that looks great with many of my outfits and shoes. Also very high quality and medium thickness. If they would make a line of thinner socks in a similar color, or any neutral blue-gray or greeenish-gray colors, with or without some oclor accents, I’d buy a drawerful.
These socks have been awesome! I purchased them for an overnight whitewater rafting trip...and if you’ve ever been on a raft, you know your feet stay submerged in water. My feet stayed toasty warm in these! They also have nice elasticity and are perfect to wear hiking as they do not rub your feet and move around in hiking boots. I often wear them at work as a night-shift nurse, since they keep healthcare facilities cold at night, and these wick away moisture and keep me toasty. Perfect all-around sock.
I love the fit, color and design of these socks. I bought a pair of Darn Tough wool crew hiking socks at the same time that I purchased these, and the Smartwool PhD socks are not tight around the ankle whereas the Darn Tough are a little tight (I have small/medium-sized ankles). This is my first time trying wool socks. My body runs warm so I worried that my feet would be too hot, but even in 80+ degree weather, my feet are perfectly comfortable. Very happy with this purchase.
I am an avid hiker, which is the primary reason I purchased them. Recently, I went back to work in the food and beverage industry, working VERY long hours. Not only were these socks comfortable every step of my 15 hour shift, my socks never budged and rolled down on me, nor did my feet sweat. My cushioned feet were thanking at the end of the day. Superior product and worth every penny
Ok, so who really raves about a sock? I felt compelled, as I’ve tried so many bad ones! 1. They stay up. 2. They don’t bunch. 3. They’re not too thin or too thick. 4. They breathe. 5. I can wear them in a shoe boot or in a hiking boot and they’re perfect. - I’m getting ready to buy a couple more pair. Highly recommend!
Perfect for all weather hiking! Just came back from a long day of hiking a wet and cold trail in the White Mountains(NH) . My feet stayed dry and comfortable the entire time! I’m ordering a few more pairs!
These socks are fine but don’t seem to be the same quality as smart wool socks I bought in the past. I can’t quite explain why but they seem to just not be as nice. Haven’t had them long enough to comment on how they wear over time, though my older pair has been going for years.
Super warm and comfy. Like the Phd version better than the regular smartwool socks because it stays in place on my foot better and doesn't scrunch up in my shoe. Really cute also.
Love the slight extra padding on the ball of the foot and the heel/Achilles area. Wonderful socks, warm but breathable and durable. Would buy again for sure!
Always happy with smartsool
